Guiding Lights Weekend in Seattle, WA

Guiding Lights Weekend, Seattle, WA
Closing the Opportunity Gap
January 29 - 30, 2010

The Guiding Lights Weekend (GLW) is partnering this year with Professor Charles Ogletree and the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School. The focus for 2010 will be "Closing the Opportunity Gap" in Seattle and beyond. GLW will create a conversation to inform and assist local leaders and activists as they chart a path toward this goal.

GLW is a platform for change makers, leaders and passionate mentors to showcase their strategies for community-building.

The theme was chosen because a person's race, cultural or linguistic background, nation of birth, socioeconomic status, place of residence or gender should not determine their quality of education, physical safety, whether they graduate from high school, their likelihood of going to prison, their career opportunities and earning power or how long they will live. An ever-growing body of research demonstrates that race, immigration status, place of residence and other factors play an enormous role in whether people are provided the opportunity to reach their full potentials as full members of the political, social and economic life in the United States.
